Marial Maher, better known as the Brooklyn-based singer Seasick Mama, has released a new single. Her indie-pop track “With A Broken Heart,” lends credence to Marial’s claim that she’s a genre-bending artist that can’t be boxed in by any one label.
On her first EP, Dead Like Money, she delivered electro-pop music with an edgy, indie-rock sheen and on her second EP, Tip Top Shape, the tracks covered a multitude of musical genres – hip-hop, soul, reggae, pop – that she connected with an electric vibe. Now with this song, Marial demonstrates definitively that she does sweet and breezy synth-pop equally well. A song about a vulnerable man not trusting a devilish woman, Mariel has described the man that inspired the lyrics as someone “too scared to take any risks.” By dropping this sexy single Seasick Mama serves notice that she is not afraid to take risks and will go where her muse leads. I for one am glad that her muse led her to the place that gave rise to this lovely and sensitive summer single.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Seasick Mama is working on songs for a new album. When asked about the direction of the new music, Muriel warns we should all be ready to dance.
