Nilüfer Yanya has today shared a new video for her recently BBC Radio 1 playlisted single “the dealer” and it’s a timely reminder to discover or rediscover her sophomore album Painless which came out in March.
It’s an album that requires multiple listens to unearth its wonders. There’s a laid-back effortless vibe with pop sensibilities often buried in an experimental fog. Melancholy harmonies are accompanied successfully with both chilled and frantic sounds with album centrepoint “Midnight Sun” a hypnotic highlight.
Album opener and fourth single “the dealer” sets the scene well and Nilüfer explains: ‘When I was writing this song I was thinking about the transient nature of life and the cyclical nature of the seasons. I find it interesting how we attach certain memories and feelings to different seasons and tend to revisit them time and time again, yet our lives move in a more linear motion and even when we feel like we are going back we never really get to go back anywhere. Musically speaking it’s a bit more playful and relaxed.’
Hailing from London, Nilüfer is the daughter of two visual artists (her Irish-Barbadian mother is a textile designer and her Turkish-born father’s work is exhibited at the British Museum) and is keeping the creative flame alive. You might be able to catch her on her current world tour, appearing at Coachella soon.
Painless is out now.
