From our interview with Dessa in issue 10, I don’t have to tell you how amazing she is. You should already know! The hip hop meets spoken word poet goddess amazes again with her latest video single for the track “Fighting Fish.”
Sometimes the more simplistic the video, the more the song tends to shine. With “Fighting Fish” this is absolutely no exception. With transparent visuals that depict a fighting (with awesome mirrored boxing gloves) among smoke and lasers show Dessa and her true ambition to reach the top of her game. Through each frame you get a direct view of what stage presence she brings as the camera remains on her through each verse, which allows those who aren’t familiar with Dessa to really feel what she’s all about.
Overall the song is quite a fantastic choice and a real treat. I’m always a little partial to those songs that contain a deeper meaning beyond that of rocking out in your car on the way to work. Where the lyric “If you don’t aim for the center, it’s a waste of art” stands, it’s telling you that when you put your energy into something you do. Never half attempt it, always aim for the bull’s eye.
“Fighting Fish” is a great reminder to us all that we should never give up on our ambitions and our dreams. It gives us reminders that none of us are perfect but that shouldn’t be an excuse to give up.
Dessa is a powerful artist in the female hip hop helm. It’d be amazing if other females in the hip hop game could take a lesson. If you got a voice, use it to spread a positive message!
