Fourculture is excited to premiere the official video for “Ten Dollar Cocktails,” the new single from Lukas Creswell-Rost.  It is the first single off his upcoming album, Go Dream, set to drop September 29 on Plain Sailing Records.  Although Lukas is a founding member of the post-rock band, The Pattern Theory, the band is currently on hiatus and he undertook this project as a solo artist.

Go Dream is an exploration of ambition, fame, success and failure; each track on the album reveals a little more about that overriding theme. “Ten Dollar Cocktails” looks at the arrogance that oftentimes comes with fame and success.  It is a moody, synth-heavy track that makes reference to an air-rage incident of Swedish heavy metal guitarist, Yngwie Malmsteen.

Directed by Bruno Derksen and Henrike Meyer, the video was filmed on the Baltic Sea and in southern Sweden.  As the song begins with a strong bass line and synth tones that sound like the pings of a ship’s radar, the video opens with shots of a large ship cutting through open water in the dark. It soon becomes clear that a couple is travelling through the night together, first by ship and later by car.  The setting is dark, the vocals muted and moody, as the exhausted woman eventually falls asleep and the man drives through the night.

It’s when they are at a truck stop for gas that the tenor of the track begins to change, swelling with otherworldly synth sounds and electric guitar.  Over the music a man’s voice can be heard yelling – loud, angry and coarse. The car arrives at a cabin just as the voice shouts: “You’ve released the fucking fury. You’ve released the fucking fury.”  And with that phrase, the man is standing in front of the cabin shredding on guitar as the woman operates a fog machine for affect. The ‘shouting’ voice in the middle of the song is actual audio footage of Yngwie Malmsteen threatening to kill a fellow passenger after she poured a glass of water on him.  Filmed on location in Sweden, the video documents a dark trip to the homeland of Malmsteen while quite effectively exploring the arrogance, selfishness, and ego of those seduced by success, money and fame.
