THE STONE ROSES

25 years on from the release of The Stone Roses, a vinyl version has now become readily available. And why is it in this week’s column? Because it still remains one of the best debut albums ever and if you haven’t got a copy then you really should get one now. With The Stone Roses hopefully bringing out new material within the next year, this is a perfect way to count down the months till that happens. Available on the Sony Music label, this is “She Bangs The Drums.”  www.thestoneroses.org | The Stone Roses on iTunes

BREATHE CAROLINA

Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Breathe Carolina are here with their new album, Savages. Three years since the release of Hell Is What You Make It, David Schmitt and his merry troop of electrorock cohorts did a cover of “Billie Jean” for the Punk Goes Pop compilation, of which they appeared on in 2010 as well. Available on the Fearless label, this is the video for “Sellouts.”  www.breathecarolina.net/  | Breathe Carolina on iTunes

THE AFGHAN WHIGS

Cincinnati’s own The Afghan Whigs are back and arrive with their first album in 16 years in the shape of Do It To The Beast. They were originally a garage punk band in the late 80’s, but followed in the footsteps of Dinosaur Jr and The Replacements in the early grunge boom. And the band have stepped back in time by resigning to Sub Pop, the label that spawned Nirvana. Do It To The Beast is available on the Sub Pop label and this is the video for “Algiers.”  http://theafghanwhigs.com/  | The Afghan Whigs on iTunes

THE CROOKES

And finally, it’s The Crookes.  The Sheffield foursome are here this week with the release of their third album, Soapbox.  They have had a lot of admirers since forming in 2008. BBC 6 Music hailed as them as the stations favourite band with Steve Lamacq championing them on BBC Radio 2 also. Richard Hawley is also a big fan, which for anyone who knows about Richard Hawley and his Sheffield music legacy is a huge compliment. Available on the Fierce Panda label, this is the video for “Play Dumb.”  www.thecrookes.co.uk | The Crookes on iTunes
