A new month and new music, that’s what we are always looking for here at Fourculture. So without further ado,
let’s have a look at this week’s featured artists with me, Mark Sharpley. We begin this week with…
ALESTORM
Scottish heavy metal outfit Alestorm are here this week with the release of their new album, Sunset On The Golden Age. Pirate metal has been one of the descriptions the band has been adhered to, whilst the band themselves describe their music genre as, “Bacon Powered Pirate Core”. But if you are thinking that this isn’t a serious piece, you would be wrong. And after all, it worked for Biffy Clyro. Available on the Napalm Records label, this is the single, “Drink”. www.alestorm.net | Alestorm on iTunes
ANGUS & JULIA STONE
Australian brother and sister folk rock duo Angus & Julia Stone are also here this week with the release of their new album, simply titled Angus & Julia Stone. They formed their band in 2006 and have been described in some circles as a mixture of Damien Rice and Bjork. And super producer Rick Rubin is at the controls for the new album, and he hasn’t done too badly for himself either when it comes to producing big albums. Worth a listen. Available on the EMI/Independiente labels, this is the single, “A Heartbreak”. www.angusandjuliastone.com | Angus & Julia Stone on iTunes
OWL JOHN
Better known to his friends as Scott Hutchison, the lead singer of Frightened Rabbit is here with his solo album, the eponymous Owl John. Made in collaboration with his bandmates, Andy Monaghan and Simon Liddell, Hutchison said of making the album, “It was approximately 10 years ago I started a band called Frightened Rabbit. In that time I have dedicated so much of my life to that good wee band with a stupid name, I felt it was time to indulge in Owl John”. Good times are ahead it seems. Available on the Atlantic Records label, this is the song, “Red Hand”. www.owljohn.com
THE ROSEBUDS
And finally this week, it’s the turn of North Carolina indie rock outfit, The Rosebuds, and the release of their new album, Sand & Silence. Not to be confused with the 1950’s group of the same name, The Rosebuds are comprised of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, and they have been the core members since forming the band in 2001. Besides their own compositions, they have appeared on tribute albums for both The Pixies and The Cure, and singer Ivan Howard even managed to squeeze in vocals for supergroup, GAYNG. Busy people indeed. Available on the Western Vinyl label, this is a track from the album called, “In MY Teeth”. www.therosebuds.com | The Rosebuds on iTunes
