My Four: Four Tracks You Need to Know About 23

In the words of The Cure, it’s still hot, hot, hot so now let’s try and cool off by introducing an
oasis of the artists you need to know about this week with myself, Mark Sharpley. And we begin with…..

MARK LANEGAN

Former Screaming Tree and occasional Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Mark Lanegan is here this week, with the release of his new E.P, No Bells On Sunday. This is a prelude to his forthcoming album, Phantom Radio, which is due out in the autumn. Lanegan teamed up with Moby in 2013 on Record Store Day and will feature on Moby’s new album, Innocents, as well. And as a thought to the holidays in December, may I also recommend Dark Mark Does Christmas as a change to the traditional music at that time. Released on the Flooded Soil/Vagrant/Heavenly Records labels, this is a track called, “Sad Lover”. www.marklanegan.com | Mark Lanegan on iTunes

JENNY LEWIS

Hailing from Las Vegas, Jenny Lewis releases her second solo album this week, entitled The Voyager. Some may already recognize her from her work with Rilo Kiley, or Jenny And Johnny of which teams up with her spouse, Johnathan Rice. Or indeed it may be from the amount of TV shows she has appeared on, such as The New Twilight Zone, Roseanne and The Golden Girls amongst others. Such a busy girl in her career, but here we will let her music do the talking. Available on the Warner Brothers label, this is, “Just One Of The Guys”. www.jennylewis.com | Jenny Lewis on iTunes

HOORAY FOR EARTH

Coming out of New York, Hooray For Earth return with their brand new album, Racy. Originating out of Boston, it was only until Noel Heroux moved to NY that they started to get really noticed. And by releasing a series of E.P.s it wasn’t long until America and Europe took note with BBC Radio 1 adding them to their playlist. That’s quite an accomplishment for the band to get on a notoriously difficult radio station to please. Released on the Dovecote label, this the single, “Keys”. www.hoorayforearth.net | Hooray for Earth on iTunes

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS

And this week, we finish with the legend that is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and their new album, Hypnotic Eye. Work started on this album in 2011 and is said to hail back to Petty’s earlier recordings with The Heartbreakers. And do expect a full tour of this album too as Petty has promised one after having residencies in theatres in Los Angeles and New York. Welcome back Tom. Available on the Reprise Records label, this is the first single from the album, “American Dream Plan B”.

There we have it for another week! Join me next week when we plow the musical fields and spread the good seed into the land of the four artists you need to know about. Keep on keeping on…
