iLLPHONiCS may be from the midwest, but they certainly know their way around west coast hip hop. The veteran band is preparing to release their latest collective of songs dv8 Pt. II, out this July. In anticipation of the release, they’ve given us “Palm Trees” — a throwback 90s anthem in the wake of Nipsey Hussle that brings us back to the golden era of hip hop. The band worked with longtime David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti on the song.
“‘Palm Trees’ is us paying homage to the West Coast,” explains vocalist Larry Morris. “When went to California years back, it was life-changing, and we knew we wanted to go back and play. The music of G Funk has been super influential on us. We had to do it in our style.”
In support of the new release, iLLPHONiCS will perform at the Riverfront Times’ ShowcaseSTL this Friday 6/21 at 9pm. Keep your eyes peeled for dv8 Pt. II this July, and enjoy “Palm Trees” below.
