Folk has a perennial way of capturing the seasons. Its roots in nature are clear, often being described as autumnal…and we have Nick Drake to thank for this with his trilogy of albums symbolising the different seasons.
Leicester-based singer songwriter Martha Bean’s new single “A Better Man” captures the current time perfectly, wrapping you up warm on a cold, crisp Sunday morning. There’s a comforting maturity about the composition, with acoustic finger picking and string backing echoing Nick Drake’s but with a fitting, contemporary air. Her debut release, When Shadows Return to the Sea, had a rawness within the polish but “A Better Man” seems more accomplished and a perfect single choice, with beauty in the delicate and the intricate.
If you like this you can catch her on dates in the UK this week.
“A Better Man” is released on 27 November.
